  • Description:
Formats that stimulate discussion with seed comments invite some participants to contribute. Offering opportunities to participate anonymously engages some learners and seems to reduce the anxiety of all participants even those who never take advantage of the feature (Hsi, 1997).
Multiple formats for on-line discussions also increase the likelihood that all the participants will find an effective format for their ideas. Often students lurk behind the scenes rather than contributing in a large on-line discussion. However, when students must express an opinion prior to reading comments from others, they often discover their voice.By offering multiple discussion formats, designers increase the ways into the discussion for individuals.
