    Description:
    This feature is an interactive picture illustrating Mammoth Mountain in California. The picture has two interactive hot spots that enable students to zoom in on two different parts of the mountain. Each zoom produces a pop-up picture of the type of rock that exists at that place on the mountain, and includes a more detailed picture of the rock and its name.
    The Rationale Behind the Feature (Specific Design Principle):
    Zooming in can help learners make connections between the big picture (the mountain) and relevant details within the picture. It shows component parts of the whole picture, which the human eye cant see without assistance. In addition, by starting with the ‘big picture’ of the mountain and then zooming in, this feature helps frame the entire activity in a familiar context.
    Context of Use:
    This feature is part of a TELS project called Rock cycle (#15815)
    Field-based Evidence:
    This feature was quite effective in the classroom. We are in the process of adding this feature to another step.
